Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar and Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon

Exciting! Don’t you love when your favorite Tobacconist hands you a cigar and says, “Try this and let me know what you think? Or the winemaker shows up to your tasting bring out a bottle of wine that hasn’t been released to the public. The logical response with that huge Chester cat grin, “It will be my pleasure”. Ok, maybe not that response, LOL but it is an exciting experience. Experiencing the unknown and excited about what’s to come. I find it honorable to be asked of your OPINION.

The Cigar Experience

IMG_2144Amoxes (the husband) and I was given a Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar, a cigar we never tried; and you know me, a perfect opportunity for a blog.

Out of habit when trying a new cigar, I sniff the foot. It is the same premise as sniffing wine before sipping. Sniffing prepares your senses and gives insight to what’s to come-sets up the cigar and wine experience, most of the time. The foot has barnyard aromas, wet wood, very earthy.

First draw – smooth with a white pepper flavor. The second and third draws, which I find myself licking my lips, the wrapper has a slight sweet note. Right from the beginning, the cigar is producing bold earthy flavors and the spice is growing on the palate.  I will preference, prior to smoking the cigar (few hours), I singed my tongue on some black tea.

IMG_2145

Amoxes is picking-up some herbal notes.  However, he could not wait to pop the cork on a bottle of 2015 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon.  He mentioned the cigar enhanced the tannins. Hmmm… I’m going to wait to pair with wine until I’m half -way through the cigar. It’s safe to assume Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar will continue to evolve for the good.

Another puff… GOODNESS, this is a smooth complex smoke; now I’m detecting floral notes. I will mention that the cigar has a nice even burn.

Wine Time

Screen Shot 2018-08-01 at 1.34.12 PM.pngI can not wait any longer, WINE TIME!

Oh My! Chateau Ste. Michelle is fruit-forward with big black fruit flavors. I agree with Amoxes, the wine paired with Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar creates bold and firm tannins.

Second sip, DELICIOUS and JUICY fruit flavors mmmm….  I LOVE Chateau Ste. Michelle wines!  The cigar paired with the wine produces bold earthy flavors with a soft grassy finish.

Lately, Chateau Ste. Michelle Pinot Noir has become our everyday drinking wine. I most definitely will be adding the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon into the rotation.  What is fantastic? The wine is under $20. If you’re intrigued, check out Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 CabSauv Tasting Notes.

Conclusion: Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar is an elegant smooth complex medium-bodied cigar and pairs perfectly with Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Enough writing, time to enjoy this experience and PSSITA!

Salute!

P.S. The last quarter of the cigar, the floral and pepper notes have dissipated and Tobaccology’s Mysterious Cigar has evolved into a full-bodied smoke. WOW!

Amoxes’ favorite Southern Draw Cigar is the Jacobs Ladder, a full-bodied cigar offering peppery flavors in the beginning and continues to evolve into a complex smoke. I prefer the Southern Draw Firethorn, which also evolves throughout the smoke creating smooth, fall spicy notes to toasty nutty flavors.

I love that the Southerndrawcigars.com website provides wine and beer pairings for their cigars. Southern Draw recommends the following wine and beer pairing for the Firethorn cigar:

CRAFT BEERS: Cream Ale, Lager, Pale Ale, Belgian, Wheat, Pilsner, and Irish Red Ale.

WINES: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Shiraz, Petit Sirah (no relation to Syrah/Shiraz) Zinfandel, Bordeaux and oaky Whites.

An Evening with Erich Sattler & Alec Bradley

The thunderstorms have passed and we are taking advantage of the mild warm temperature of 88 degrees fahrenheit.  For the past few days, temperatures reached 100 – 114 degrees fahrenheit with the heat index. The tiki torches are lit and the cicadas and frogs are keeping us company.

The wine and cigar selections for the evening are Erich Sattler, St. Laurent 2015 and Alec Bradley Sanctum and Maxx.

We were introduced to Erich Sattler, St. Laurent 2015 doing a wine flight at Trummer’s Coffee and Wine bar in Gainesville, VA. Check out my first blog on Trummer’s .

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Erich Sattler, St, Laurent 2015 is an Australian red wine; an offspring of the Pinot Noir grape. The color is so deep and rich, it looks like I’m pouring a glass of Welch’s grape juice.  Fruit-forward, plummy and cherry flavors with firm tannins coat my palate.  Mmmm… it was a great idea to purchase 3 bottles

Erich pairs very well this big bazooka Alec Bradley Sanctum that is producing rich earthy and chocolate notes with a slight spice on the finish.

My husband is having the Alec Bradley Maxx with Erich, which has rich earthy flavors with little hoppy on the finish. Paired with Erich, the wine and cigar does not compete with each other. Eric brings out Maxx’s nutty flavors.

When we purchased the cigars, we thought it was for novelty purposes only. Due to my passion for Alec Bradley cigars, I could not pass plus the cost was under $10.00.

We both are please with our selections. The aromas in the night-humid air are intoxicating. By the way, we are more than half-way through with the cigars and the flavors are evolving very nicely. If you are wondering, it took us approximately 3.5 hours to finish the cigars.

That’s MurLarkey! MurLarkey Distilled Spirits and Cigar Tasting

“That’s MurLarkey!”

IMG_6862

This blog is way overdue. Even though our visit to MurLarkey Distilled Spirits, LLC occurred late last year, the experience is still worth writing about. I will add that this was my first spirit tasting and I’m too excited. I’m going to jump straight to my rating. My overall rating is MurLarkey Distilled Spirits, LLC, Bristow, VA is FANTASTIC and a MUST VISIT and here’s why:

BACKGROUND

Two Irish-American cousins, friends and professionals utilized their knowledge, skills and heritage and turned a dream, a concept, into a legacy and created a Certified Craft Distillery.

Paying homage to their Irish heritage, the name Murlarkey was derived from cousins, Murray and Larken incorporating their maternal grandparents names: Murray, Larking and Kelly. They realized the family names (Mur-Lar-Key) resembled the Irish word “malarkey”, which means fun; thus Murlarkey was established.

MurLarkey vodka is distilled 16 times and “polished” for 24 hours over activated carbon of for the smoothest finish. Each of our flavored whiskeys are slow infused with all natural fruit and spices in white oak barrels for weeks at a time. Our gin is a proprietary recipe of 12 unique, all natural botanicals, culminating in a spirit that appeals to non gin drinkers.”

TASTING

Divine Clarity – Pure potato vodka, natural and gluten-free, smooth, and soft; adding one ice cube opens the vodka. I am not a vodka drinker, but this is pleasant. We were made a mixer of Clarity and ginger beer with lime – VERY TASTY!

JusticeOur Ultimate Favorite! white whiskey with a blend of Virginia corn and barley. Clean, soft, nutty with a grassy finish. Great on the rocks, which created salty margarita aromas and subtle nutty flavors.

Clemoncy – a whiskey that is poured over lemon peels and left to infuse in white oak barrels. Clemoncy mixed with Simple Lemonade makes a refreshing adult lemonade, perfect for a brunch or wedding cocktail. Reminds me of gin with a hint of lemon.

Cincerity“Fall in a Glass”, is whiskey infused with cinnamon sticks; possessing vanilla aromas and explosions of apple, cinnamon and fall spices. This, by far, is NOT “Fireball”. VERY NICE SURPRISE!

* We were served a Cinnamule made with Cincerity, DELICIOUS!
* Cincerity with cream soda tasted like I bit into a “Cinnabon” with a hint of vanilla. OH MY GOODNESS!

Imagination – An all natural and gluten-free premium gin. A blend of 12 fresh cut natural botanical that can be drank as an aperitif, on the rocks or in a mixer. I do not like the taste of gin, but Murlarkey’s Gin was tasty!

We purchased the Justice and Cincerity; now time to pair with some cigars.

CIGAR PAIRING WITH CINCERITY AND JUSTICE

Tobaccology Mysterious Cigar and Justice was okay.  I had difficulty getting pass the taste of having a cigar with a margarita. Definitely need to pair Justice with another cigar.

Joya de Nicaguara Black – the Cincerity enhance and compliment the spice, cedar and earthy flavors in the Joya Black. Overall: a nice pair that offers a BOLD experience.

Perdomo Vintage aged 12 years-2004 aged tobacco aged in Blanton barrels and Cincerity created a smooth and soft pairing, gentle on the palate while still offering a complex combination. VERY NICE!

Alec Brady Post Embargo and Cincerity – We have found the PERFECT cigar pairing for this whiskey. The blend of the two enhances the flavors producing a smooth flavorful combination. We recommend having Cincerity on the rocks. FANTASTIC PAIR!

I do not know if it is the time of year, but our favorite has shifted from the Justice to Cincerity.

Does Decoy 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon measure up to our first experience? Hmmm, I hope so.

I’m watching the wine flow through the aerator and I find myself asking, “What is this grape juice?”

Decoy’s is thin-watery with deep plum coloring. The husband has already taken a sip and immediately Decoy receives multiples nods of approval, which was followed by “This is Good Sh..!” O_O with more nodding. YUPPER! (Can’t make this up; remember the blog is called, “Treevinos, Not Your Ordinary Wine Blog!”)

Let’s see if Decoy 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon measures up to MY first experience, which was at Burke Cigars, Burke, VA or were we just caught up in the ambiance of good company, celebration, cigars, wine and art. Before I continue, I have to give thanks to Shami-Owner of Burke Cigars, and All for the warm hospitality, THANK YOU!

2014 INTRINSIC – SENSORY OVERLOAD!

This is FANTASTIC!

14055553_10207583835010320_1860055787_n

For the past few days, I have been under the weather. I do not know if it was due too excessive heat. Regardless, my bug has passed and I see a bottle in the refrigerator with a red label, which I recall purchasing (Intrinsic) from Total Wines.

“Hmmmm, let me see if this 2014 Intrinsic is still good before I open up this bottle of Horton Norton, which I have not had in years”. It appears that only a glass was previously consumed. I am greeted with a burst of fruity aromas and the color is rich and dark. I begin to salivate and the glass  is immediately brought to my lips, without sniffing. I know this is big no-no, but the urge to taste was too powerful-took over my senses and OH MY GOODNESS! THIS IS FANTASTIC!

I want to mentioned, to take the chill off, I waited approximately 30 minutes before tasting the wine. AGAIN, OH MY GOODNESS! (still sipping). I do not if the wine is as delicious as I am experiencing because I had a strong desire for a glass of wine..NO, this is not the case; Intrinsic is DELICIOUS! Intrinsic is AMAZING! I can not wait to taste this wine when it has not been sitting for days.

Intrinsic is fruit-forward with cherry and blackberries flavors. A perfect example of what a full-bodied red wine should possess. Intrinsic immediately reminds me of Orin Swift’s Palermo, The Prisoner, and Papillon wines. How the wines possess character, complexity and a magnitude of flavors. When your brain is flooded with senses that it can not catch-up to what you are tasting. Your hands are unable to transcribe every scent and flavor that is gracing your palate. So you sip and write, sip and write and sip and write, which I am doing write now.

Intrinsic is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and ten percent of wine is fermented in concrete tanks producing an amazing complex wine with soft mineral notes.

IMG_5446

Intrinsic went very well with Tobaccology, Haymarket, VA mystery cigar

On top of this magnificent wine, the wine label, titled “The Lady in Red” is beautiful piece of art created by New York City, artist “ZIMER”. If you look closely at the wine label, the artist’s name appear in the gown.

Intrinsic made such an impression that I had to include the wine in a private tasting I was conducting (Treevinos – Up Close and Personal). Intrinsic was a HUGE success with the ladies; so much the next day, the host purchased two bottles and gave me one as a thank you gift. 🙂

My Mother’s Day Treat – 1893, Bas-Armagnac Delord X.O.

First let me state, I am a novice when it comes to spirits. However, my years of tasting has matured my palate and with the assistance and knowledge from my husband, I am capable of identifying a good spirit when I come across one.

Folks, I have been presented with one; 1893 Bas-Armagnac Delord X.O. is an OUTSTANDING cognac!

For mother’s day, my wonderful husband and mother-in-law gifted me with a bottle of a French cognac, Bas-Armagnac Delord X.O. FYI,  Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gastony region of southwestern France.

After chipping away the melted plastic from around the mouth, it made me wonder “Goodness, was this cognac sealed in 1893?!”

We popped the cork and was greeted with bold aromas bold fall spices of vanilla, clove, cinnamon, caramel with cedar & Oak. We’re reminded of the butterscotch candies.

Bas-Armagnac Delord X.O has a beautiful blood orange color.

OMGGG! Smooth, creamy vanilla with touches caramel flavors with just enough heat.

13318993_10206957001459873_1704687769_n

After ten days of cloudy weather, the sun has broke through on this Friday 13th and the air is filled with the cognac aromas. This has turned out to be a beautiful Friday the 13th, which has always been a day of good luck :).

Today, Bas-Armagnac is paired with Oscar and Felicia cigars and great Latin Jazz. With the cigars’ saddle wood and soft spice aromas, the cognac, the music and warm spring breeze, we have escaped to Paradise.

I respect history and when you’re consuming a spirit or wine that dates back to 1893, it is important to know its origin.

HISTORY

The Armagnac Delord story dates back to four generations that begin in 1893.

In 1893, Prosper Delord, a distiller and cellar master, travelled with his alambic (yes, I had to research alambic, which is a vessel with a beaked cap that was formerly used in distilling) to farms, converting white wine into Armagnac.

NOTE. Alambic Distillation is an ancient technique that date backs to the Chinese 3000 years BC. For historical information on Alambic Distillation visit www.essentialspirits.com.

In 1932, Prosper’s sons, Gaston and Georges created the “Armagnac house Delord Freres” in Lannepax. Being producers, distillers and traders and sold their Bas-Armagnacs from Gascony, France to the United States.

From 1963, Gaston’s sons continue the Armagnac adventure and run the family business.

The House of Deloard’s vineyard is located in the village of Lannepax and is 42 hectares, which is equivalent to approximately 104 acres of land. It is comprised of four traditional Armagnac grape varieties: Ugni Blanc 56%, Colombard 24%, Baco 14% and Folle-Blanche 6%.

Thank You My Wonderful Husband and Mama Monique!

Pinnacoli 2012 Primitivo & LaGloria Series R

The Cure for Mars-Mercury Retrograde

You know you are in for treat when you pop the cork and you are greeted with a blast fruity aromas. There’s a haze of aromas in the air and a slight breeze just carried it away. Mmmm… thus far, Pinnacoli 2012 Primitivo Di Manduria is off to a great start.

Color – beautiful shimmering crimson red color.

Taste – OMG! Fruit-forward black cherries flavors with soft mild tannins on the finish. The third sip introduces earthy and spicy notes with a slight herbal on the back of the palate.

Pinnacoli Primitivo is the perfect cure to Mars-Mercury retrograde. Mars-Mercury retrograde??? Yes, Mars-Mercury retrograde, let me explain:

mercury-pixabay-822825_1280

courtesy of almanac.com

Excerpt from Farmer’s Almanac:

Meaning of Mercury Retrograde
… Sometimes the other planets appear to be traveling backward through the zodiac; this is an illusion. We call this illusion retrograde motion.
Several times a year, it appears as if Mercury is going backwards. This time was traditionally associated with confusions, delay, and frustration. Perhaps Mercury’s retrograde periods can cause our plans to go awry. However, this is an excellent time to reflect on the past. Intuition is high during these periods, and coincidences can be extraordinary.

What to Do When Mercury is Retrograde
The planet Mercury rules communication, travel, contracts, automobiles, and such. So,when Mercury is retrograde, remain flexible, allow time for extra travel, and avoid signing contracts. Review projects and plans at these times, but wait until Mercury is direct again to make any final decisions.
About a week or two before Mercury retrogrades, finish any tasks or projects at hand.  You can’t stop your life, but plan ahead, have back-up plans, and be prepared for angrier people and miscommunication.

To make matters worse, Mars is also in retrograde. Yes, the universe is giving us a double-whamming. If you are curious, per the Farmer’s Almanac, following are the 2016 Mercury Retrograde dates and Do’s and Dont’s during Mars-Mercury Retrograde:

• January 5 to 25
• April 28 to May 22
• August 30 to September 22
• December 19 to 31

MARS is Retrograde – Be Careful of Your Actions: 5 DOs
and 5 Dont’s – Mars Retrograde Do’s and Dont’s.

… Once every 2 years the planet Mars goes retrograde, as it will from April 17 through June 29, 2016. During this time span we may want to think “twice” about initiating certain actions because the retrograde can lower our energy level and bring frustration and obstacles to our major efforts.

In less than a week, I began to experience the effects of Mars-Mercury retrograde:

  • First incident, my federal taxes were rejected due to someone used my social security number to files taxes to receive a refund;
  • Second, family crisis; and
  • The third incident, my lawnmower that I utilized for only one season started leaking gasoline. In my attempt to save money, I told my lawn service that their services were no longer required this season.

I surrendered to the universe and allowed the system to correct itself. So, I did what I do best, sip, puff and write.

Enough astrology; now, it’s time to see how well Pinnacoli Primitivo pairs with a full-bodied La Gloria Cubana Series R cigar. I typically would not pair a full-bodied cigar with a Zinfandel. For those of you who do not know, Primitivo is the same as Zinfandel (Zin).

DNA testing confirmed that Italy’s Primitivo and Crljenak Kastelanski, an ancient Croatian variety, are genetically identical to California’s Zinfandel grape. However, there are some differences in vine strength and the size of the grapes cluster. In April 2002, U.S. government was considering Zinfandel and Primitivo as synonyms. However, a decision has not been made and the U.S. requires Zinfandel and Primitivo be identified separately on wine labels. (wineinstitute.org and winespector.com)

You can’t discuss Zinfandel without mentioning Ridge Vineyards in Paso Robles, CA, which in my opinion produces MAGNIFICENT Zins!

LaGloria Cubana is one of “go-to” cigars that never disappoints. I have to mention, you have to respect the workmanship that goes into designing a cigar band. It by far doesn’t represent the quality and taste of a cigar. But, as consumers, we are attracted to the flashy and the Series R band is a nice piece of art.

LaGloria Cubana Series R has a nice draw and I’m detecting cocoa flavors -smooth smoke. The LaGloria has soften the cherry flavors and reintroduced herbal notes in the wine. My wine covered palate has also produced spicy and herbal notes in the cigar. FANTASTIC smoke!

Smoking a cigar and sipping a delicious wine unwinds the mind and relaxes the soul; I am content.

I will say Pinnacoli 2012 Primitivo Di Manduria is holding up well to LaGloria Cubana Series R. FOLKS, WE HAVE A MATCH!

P.S. In my attempt to be healthy, I’m consuming one glass of wine a day. On day three, Pinnacoli 2012 Primitivo is still yummy and flavors continue to intensify.

Salute!

Announcing Our New Book – “The Puros Diary vol.1”

Challenges of the Self-Publishing

The self-publishing process to release an affordable and quality product has been daunting. Without a major publishing company to cover sales, printing and marketing expenses, which are outrageous, prevents an author to release a product at large volume and for a reasonable sale price. Even though troublesome and days of contemplation, we continued with our goal & published a book, which will soon be available in an ebook edition.

Our adult illustrated short story base cost has exceeded our desired sale price. So, do not be alarmed by the sticker price and hold the “Who the hell do they think they are?!” comments 🙂 ; just know the profit is below $5.00.

Without further a due, we are proud to release the cover our first book collaboration, “The Puros Diary vol. 1”.
